How to find your perfect makeup artist

Choosing a makeup artist (MUA) for your wedding day is almost as important as choosing your dress.
We encourage brides to find a talented and professional makeup artist they can identify with and trust.
The makeup artist you choose will be with you the morning of your wedding day, which is a special time full of nerves and excitement.
You need to feel comfortable with them, and they should fit in seamlessly, like an extension of your bridal party.”

Choosing a bridal makeup artist is about more than just makeup.

In addition to makeup, we help with a whole host of other things, like holding babies, adjusting bridesmaids’ dresses, opening the door, and most importantly, encouraging words!
When the bride is sitting with us, we spend that time calming her, soothing her nerves and making her feel comfortable. It’s all part of the job,

To help you choose the right MUA for your wedding day, we have provided a step-by-step process to ensure your bridal makeup artist is a perfect choice.

How to choose a wedding makeup artist

  1. FIND BRIDAL MAKEUP STYLES YOU LIKE.
When finding bridal makeup styles you like, start with Google.
Collect, screenshot and save images of makeup you like and try to figure out what you like about the makeup in the picture.
Pay attention to the person’s facial features and skin tone in the picture – would the makeup look similar to you?
If not, it’s probably not a good example.
Then, once you’ve found and chosen your makeup artist, it’s their job to bring your vision to life.

  2. FIND MAKEUP ARTISTS NEAR YOUR VENUE.
Start by finding makeup artists near the venue where you want to get ready.
Check out their websites and social media profiles to see their past work. They should have plenty of examples of brides they’ve worked with – look for photos of bridal makeups, not fashion or creative makeup.
You need to be able to see past bridal looks from real weddings and make sure they have experience with wedding makeup.

  3. READ REVIEWS.
When brides take the time to thank their makeup artist after their wedding, you know they did a great job.
Check out the website to see if they have a testimonial page and check their social media for any posts or reviews.
There’s no reason to hide from Facebook or Google reviews – they’re from real people and can’t be deleted, so that’s a good place to start.

  4. CREATE A SHORTLIST AND APPROACH THEM.
“Create a shortlist of your potential makeup artists and contact them to find out their availability and pricing and to see if they would be a good fit for you.
You may want to talk to several makeup artists to find someone you feel comfortable with and whose style and vision match yours.

6 important questions to ask your wedding makeup artist

  1. CAN THEY TRAVEL TO YOU ON THE DAY OF THE WEDDING?
“Make sure they are a mobile makeup artist who is willing to travel to you on your wedding day and that they are not too far away from where you are getting ready.
  2. DO YOU DO WEDDING TRIALS?
    A
bridal trial is important to make sure your makeup artist can achieve the look you want, and it will also give you confidence on the day of the wedding.
  3. WHAT MAKEUP BRANDS DO YOU USE?
Make sure you choose a makeup artist who uses high-quality brands. Also, make sure you inform them of any skin conditions or allergies so they can address them.
  4. HOW LONG WILL MAKEUP TAKE IN A DAY?
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to do the bride’s makeup. If you book your makeup artist for your bridesmaids and mothers or other guests, I recommend allowing at least 30 to 45 minutes for each additional person.
  5. HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
They should be happy to discuss the
packages they offer and give you an estimate over the phone. The level of expertise, location and size of the wedding party will affect the cost.
  6. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GET SICK ON THE DAY OR HAVE AN EMERGENCY?
The chances of your makeup artist getting sick or having an emergency on your wedding day are slim, but if you have a contingency plan, you can rest easy.

Choose your makeup artist and book a trial

Based on your conversations with your potential makeup artists, you should feel confident about making a decision.
If not, start the process again until you find your perfect match.

Trials are important so you can meet your makeup artist and try out what you want.
This also means that if for some reason, you’re not happy with the makeup artist, you have time to find someone else.
We recommend booking a trial quickly so you can get to know your makeup artist and secure the booking for your wedding date.
Popular dates fill up fast!
You can then feel prepared for your wedding day.

Bring makeup image ideas to your trial to go over together.
Many of our clients create mood boards on Instagram, and Pinterest with makeup looks they like.
However, you may not have any idea of what you want at all, in which case you and your MUA can work together to find your perfect bridal look.”

How far in advance should you book your hair and makeup?

Most makeup artists open their calendar 12 months in advance, and you can start researching earlier to make sure you get your first choice. I wouldn’t recommend doing it later than three months before your wedding day.

Our last word of advice

Don’t be afraid of lashes!
Even if you have soft and natural makeup, a few individual lashes can be special on your big day, and they look great in photos.

Bring a touch up kit with you!
Ensure a bridesmaid or mother of the bride has your lipstick, a powder, a buffing brush, a setting spray and some cotton buds.
A couple of band aids, painkillers and mints are also a great idea to pop in as well.
