Choosing a makeup artist for your wedding can seem daunting. This article will give you some ideas and questions to ask your future artist.

How to ensure you enjoy your getting ready time prior to your wedding ceremony...

Ashley's top tips

As I've been a professional hair and makeup artist for over 7 years now, I've been apart of countless bridal prep mornings I have therefore seen my fair share of how best to enjoy your getting ready morning (or afternoon) before your wedding ceremony (I have a few tips from my own wedding I can share with you)

Here are my top tips and recommendations:

  • Set up area, please if possible clear a big enough table for your artists to have ample space to set up for your hair and or makeup to be done, working from a cramped / cluttered space can be challenging at the best of times.
  • Timeframes, it's crucial for your hair and makeup team to work together to ensure that all the booked services run smoothly and on time, please communicate with your bridal party what time they need to be ready to have their hair and or makeup done, so that the artists are not having to wait whilst someone is MIA / still on their way.
  • Please already decide with your bridal party who will be going first for either their hair & or makeup (we know not everyone will jump at having their hair/makeup done First but this shouldn't be the bride unless it's been requested)
  • Inspo / reference images to be ready to show the artist, please communicate with your bridal party that they will need to have pre-decided on what hairstyle & or makeup look they (or you) will be wanting. If we have to wait whilst someone searches through 10000 images or needs time to Google their 15x different hairstyles this all cuts into the timeframes, especially the Brides time.
  • Please try to have your dresses steamed the night before, or well before you have your hair and makeup done, it's best to stay away from any steam / humidity / the environmental elements once your hair & or makeup is completed to give it the best chance of lasting
  • Please ensure you and your bridal party have a clean/cleansed face free of any residual makeup, if the makeup artist has to spend 5-10mins trying to remove last night's makeup this cuts into the over-all timeframes
  • Assign your mobile phone to someone whilst you are having your makeup & or hair done
  • Play relaxation / chilled music to set the tone for your getting ready morning, especially if you feel you might be stressed or nervous this really does help to calm any nerves, even lighting scented candles might help too
  • Factor in eating or when you will want to eat, snacks / finger foods that are easy to quickly eat, rather than a sit down banquet is a smarter & easier option for you and your bridal party. Please ensure you have eaten well in advance to having your makeup touch-ups done. It's really difficult for your artist to apply your lipstick / makeup while you are still trying to eat and drink (have a straw handy once your lippy goes on so you can still sip your drink of choice)
  • Additional people / children being present in your getting ready space. I know your extended family members, aunties, cousins and perhaps your cute niece or nephew are super excited that you are getting married, however if they don't really need to be present whilst you are getting your hair / makeup done, it's best that they come to see you well before you need to be ready, or wait until another suitable time. I've seen this happen multiple times and it can get very overwhelming for the bride, especially if you are starting to feel nervous or stressed, not to mention for the artist who is trying to do their best work around 20 other surplus people who have entered the space you are getting ready in it all gets a bit crazy and quite stressful.
  • There might be a high potential that something might not go exactly how you planned / some small detail may get missed to something else going "wrong" on the day of your wedding, there are after all so many moving parts to a wedding, with a lot of people that might be involved - try not to get too fixated on the "issue / problem" at hand, I know it might be hard to accept on the day, however try your best to remain positive and remind yourself of the true meaning of why you are getting married. In years to come you will probably laugh at that "thing" that went "wrong/not according to your ideal" - I've got a few stories I can share.
  • Please tell us if there's something you are not completely happy with be it with your hair & or makeup. As professional artists we strive to make our clients 100% happy, however we are not mind-readers, there may have been a slight misinterpretation of the style / makeup look you were after, please notify us as soon as possible so we can do our best to amend/rectify the over-all look. Please don't sit there in silence if you are not happy about something, we'd rather you give us the opportunity to fix / resolve the issue for you than finding out afterwards that you didn't like something with the makeup / hair.
